This film is one of spiellbergs underrated works and is far superior to ghost which came a year after this and made lots of money. There are not many well made 'what happens after death' based movies and Always is one of those underrated gems which deserved better.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-4416819260481385072010-12-21T18:06:34.720-05:002010-12-21T18:06:34.720-05:00Worst Spielberg movie ever. It sort of gives weight to the accusation by Siskel & Ebert at the time that Spielberg didn't know how to film sex scenes. And then, of course, came Schindler's List.

But regardless, I have a soft spot for Always. It's minor Spielberg, but I can't dismiss it in the least. Dreyfuss, Hunter and Goodman are all lovable in the leads, as is Audrey Hepburn; I can't get enough of that scene where Spielberg's camera tracks Hepburn and Dreyfuss as they're gliding through the heavenly wheat fields. Wonderful Mikael Salomon cinematography right there. And the John Williams score is enjoyable sappy. I still own the movie's soundtrack on a small cassette tape and I used to listen to the J.D. Souther version of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" over and over again.

One thing I noticed when watching the film again is that it shares a Spielbergian theme with Last Crusade, released the same year: a theme of letting go. Hap tells Pete to let Dorinda go because until then, "neither you nor her will ever be free." And Henry Jones says, "Indiana, let it go." It's as if Spielberg was reminding himself--in his own movies--to let go all of this silly Hollywood entertainment and start making quality movies again. Coupled with this and Hook (which is all about growing up), you can almost sense the fidgiting of Spielberg behind the scenes in trying desperately to keep his promise to Poldek Pfefferberg, in 1983, that he would film Schindler's List in exactly ten years. You can kind of feel his anxiety for that wait to be over.

Really, the only big problems I have with Always are the asexuality of the characters as well as the miscasting of the abysmal Brad Johnson. If I have to listen to that John Wayne impersonation one more time...Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.com
