For me, it dragged. I'm not sure if that had to do with my film sensibilities at the time (I think I was about to be a freshman in college, so I was by no means 'too young' for this picture, but I suspect I'm even more patient now than I was then; though, curiously, I find I'm getting increasingly impatient over the past year or two, perhaps as a result of seeing too many lousy movies and feeling that they're wasting my increasingly too scarce free time. Where was I?). I suspect the biggest reason the film dragged is because I missed the swiftness of The Magnificent Seven, and, more than anything, I missed Elmer Bernstein's score. Knowing Samurai was the model for Mag 7, I just assumed (rather stupidly) that it would have the same spirit.

All of that said, I don't want to discount that I first saw the film on a pretty crappy VHS copy. And that's my reason for commenting today, because this is one of those movies that's (slowly) moving its way up my Netflix queue, and I have no doubt that the improved format alone will make it seem more intimate and lively on my next (second) viewing.

I didn't read your entire review, but as usual it's well written, and your analysis has me thinking that maybe Samurai needs to leapfrog some other movies in my queue.Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.com
