Love Scorsese, but it's getting so that the great movies are outnumbered by the not-so-great movies, and "Bringing Out The Dead" shouldn't even be on the Top 100, much less Top 10! (but it's your list, so you can put whatever you want on it, of course!). To the person who asked why it was the most overlooked film in Scorsese's canon, it's because it's simply not that good, not that memorable, and ridiculously absurd (perhaps you need to live in NYC to understand how absurd). Marc Anthony as the homeless guy is particularly laughable, so are some of the ridiculous over-the-top "action" sequences with the ambulance. That was when Scorsese "jumped the shark", and frankly, he's never made a decent movie since, at least in my opinion.

On the other hand, thank you for putting up "Chimes At Midnight", that has got to be one of the greatest - if not the greatest - Shakespeare committed to film. Not only is it Welles' greatest performance (the end? when the King rejects him? Oof!), but John Gielgud is fantastic. You watch that movie and you just want to weep, get angry, yell at someone, thinking that this guy spent the next twenty five years trying (unsuccessfully) to raise money to make another movie, unbelievable. I was very impressed by it when it came out and then promptly forgot it for some reason; it may be the most overlooked film in Scorsese's canon. Delighted to see some of my favourites here, such as 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, 2001, Blazing Saddles and Celine and Julie Go Boating, among others. In fact, if you're a fan of Celine and Julie, you may be envious to hear I have acquired a copy of Rivette's Out 1 (damaged and imperfect, but good enough) and will be watching it soon. Rivette is incredible, I absolutely love his film La Belle Noiseuse.Tylerhttp://magnoliaforever.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-21399294330954821012012-06-01T08:22:57.396-04:002012-06-01T08:22:57.396-04:00Thank you! I've watched a boot I torrented since, though, and I didn't think the quality was that bad--certainly not bad enough to skip it.

I'm with you guys on Dead too; one of Scorsese's best.Peter Lenihanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02321136631371064331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-17040512702531289252012-05-28T23:20:28.373-04:002012-05-28T23:20:28.373-04:00Whoa! (Still haven't gotten around to watching the Vigo Blu-ray, for example.) I also really like your more off-beat choices. A.I.? Gold! Also, I love that you have L'argent on here. I pretty much loathed my journey through almost all Bresson's filmography, but L'argent was the perfect melding of his dispassionate style with a pointed subject. Where I hated the distance of his other films in almost every case (except A Man Escaped), it worked so perfectly with L'argent. A truly great film from a director I cannot stand.Corey Atadhttp://justatad.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-83395979049217698282012-05-28T23:00:59.402-04:002012-05-28T23:00:59.402-04:00I've been meaning to rewatch Bringing Out the ...I've been meaning to rewatch Bringing Out the Dead for literally years and years; I saw it in the theater as a freshman in high school on a complete whim with only the name Scorsese luring me in, and remember walking out in a complete punch-drunk daze. I've no idea why another viewing has taken me so long, but images are still burned into my head all this time later, and I suspect I'm going to fall in love with it all over again whenever I get back around to it.

All in all, a mint first batch, Jake. Many, many personal favorites here for me, too. Chimes I just watched for the first time a few weeks back actually, to say I was blown away would be an understatement.

Looking forward to the future entries here.Drew McIntoshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07054307044280470117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-46474410721931736242012-05-28T22:45:12.974-04:002012-05-28T22:45:12.974-04:00Peter, Yang will appear, but I've never seen A...Peter, Yang will appear, but I've never seen A Brighter Summer Day. There's some old bootleg of it floating around the Internet, but it's of such atrocious video quality that I can't bring myself to watch it. I'm hoping that Janus' recent tour of the restored print means they've nearly sorted out whatever rights issue has kept them from releasing it all these years.Jake Colehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15532951308638768249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-90922993107365769902012-05-28T22:40:28.908-04:002012-05-28T22:40:28.908-04:00Suprised to see no Yang here. I think it might be Scorsese's best style parade, and the one that, unlike After Hours or Casino, is still emotionally resonant.
