What a shame ...Jason, I totally agree about Spacey. What a shame that he just tanked afterward when I think he deserved all kinds of awards for this.

It amazes me how much I think of Se7en as a gimmick film in retrospect and how I am utterly engrossed by it when I watch it. I think I let parody get to me and don't appreciate how complex an artist Fincher really is and how he cares for far more than simply style.Jakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09078001374402400232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-25843389181562926942010-09-29T21:32:41.513-04:002010-09-29T21:32:41.513-04:00First of all, if you can't tell: I printed off...First of all, if you can't tell: I printed off a bunch of reviews I was saving for later and finally caught up with them; hence the comments binge.

As much as it's easy to lose Se7en behind its gimmick and gruesomeness, sometimes I think this is Fincher's best film thru Zodiac. If I had to choose, I'd pick the latter, but whenever I watch this film I'm stunned at how artful it is, how vivid yet elusive Somerset is, how perfectly Paltrow's character hangs around the edges of this film, just close enough to everything to give the climax its emotional pop. Speaking of which, I think Pitt's extreme reaction is fucking genius.

The only thing that disappoints me about this film now is the John Doe monologue. Not because there's something wrong with it. Far from it. It's marvelous. But that's a scene that would somehow be more powerful if Kevin Spacey had fallen off the face of the earth after Se7en. It's a role meant to be played by a guy who thrills in that scene and then plays "that guy" characters for the rest of his career. Now it's tough to watch that scene without at some point thinking ... K-PAX, Pay It Forward, etc. Ugh.Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.com
