He's using his clout and his expertise to push himself to new places. I don't know how consistently he'll succeed (TWIXT is just getting hammered) but he's really branching out.

James: I agree. Flaws make ambiguity, and ambiguity magnifies possibilities. A.I. is a flawed film, with jarring mash-ups of Spielbergian and Kubrickian imagery and tropes (though the two directors often inverted on that project), but those flaws make it deeper. I have less and less use for hermetically sealed movies by any save the greatest masters (Mizoguchi, Ozu, Kubrick, etc). This more ambitious stuff grabs me better.Jake Colehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15532951308638768249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-14131758612270677232011-09-16T00:40:38.833-04:002011-09-16T00:40:38.833-04:00Yes. I don't think it was a complete success, ...Yes. I don't think it was a complete success, but if it did fail it did so bravely and with more ambition than most big Hollywood films. And I've always found the flawed masterpieces are often more interesting than the ones that come off perfectly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-24272847395689162842011-09-15T22:08:03.647-04:002011-09-15T22:08:03.647-04:00I'm a big fan of the Coppola family. I wanted to see this based on the fact that it's his first film in a decade after spending a lot of that time producing other films and re-mastering or revive some of his other films. I did hear his new film got some mixed to negative reviews for its experiment. Yet, I give him credit that at least if he's going to fail. He will fail on his own terms and keep trying. Plus, he seems to be having fun making the kind of films he want to see.thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.com
