But in retrospect it makes sense, as you took a handful of the film's so called "flaws" and showed why they actually define it.

And yes, Bledel's eyes are gorgeous. So gorgeous. Alexis in general is gorgeous. I just want to like, sit on her. And pretend like I'm going to sleep so she just sits there. He obviously understood Miller's comic book very well and did a fantastic job of translating it to the screen. Rodriguez is at his best when he has material like this to work with - for example, I'd say that PLANET TERROR is arguably the best thing he's ever done as he tackles his obsession with George Romero and John Carpenter head on with dazzling results.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-45065350250526006092010-01-31T03:02:20.346-05:002010-01-31T03:02:20.346-05:00Jake, a lovely review of a film that I have extrem...Jake, a lovely review of a film that I have extremely mixed feelings for. For me, Sin City suffers from an unorthodox structure; Rodriguez and Miller unwisely try to model it off Pulp Fiction, as if that's going to make the project any more unconventional than is necessary. Instead, the "three segments" structure flip-flopped my emotional responses all over the place. One minute I was entertained by the Marv subplot, the next minute I was completely bored to tears by the Dwight subplot (a story that went nowhere, headed by characters that I didn't care a lick for- like Spider Man 3 two years later, it attempts to handle too many heroes and villains at once); and lastly, as Mercer mentioned, I was finally drawn into a story that I could empathize with, regarding Hartigan's conflicts with the Yellow Bastard. But the results don't add up into something capable of processing as any sort of powerful experience.

Lisa Schwarzbaum summed up some of my complaints over the film in her Entertainment Weekly review: the movie should have just been centered around one single protagonist. That way there would have been a more definite narrative thread. Schwarzbaum herself thinks Marv should have been the main character. I, personally, would have accepted either Marv or Hartigan as the protagonist. Or, better yet, have the two characters join forces in some way. Anything as long as that directionless Dwight subplot could have been thrown out.

Rather, that Rodriguez and Miller instead try to assign multiple protagonists to Sin City makes it terribly difficult to really be moved by the nonstop violence which, as FilmDR mentioned, pretty much happens every two minutes or so. After awhile, I started getting irritated by the violence, and it was because I stopped caring. It became impossible to get involved in all of those stories at once! All the same, this piece of yours dazzles me endlessly. And thanks for talking about how Tarantino's guest-directed scene pays homage to Peckinpah; I probably didn't pick that up when I saw the film because I hadn't seen Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia at the time. I'm surprised by that, though, since I never presumed Tarantino was much of a Peckinpah fan... unless you count the minor influences that Cross of Iron may or may not have had on Basterds.Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-77117864038213030632010-01-30T20:52:39.516-05:002010-01-30T20:52:39.516-05:00Just wanted to let you guys know that I've nom...Just wanted to let you guys know that I've nominated you for a Kreativ Blogger Award. Using it to wrap up the rest of the film was a good move, I think. Gave the film an emotional climax that did something to justify the silliness and spectacle.I.V.P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/17167362896416316361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-5650745799022405752010-01-30T06:51:15.833-05:002010-01-30T06:51:15.833-05:00Superb piece. I enjoyed the noir aspects of Sin City, but the film left me thinking of the jaded short attention span of its audience, the way it needs something extreme to happen frequently to keep it engaged. Such relentless hyperviolence got tiresome after awhile, but I agree with you about the clever use of computer animation. The Film Doctor https://www.blogger.com/profile/03073505923746994988noreply@blogger.com
