When the action comes it is tense and artfully done without shying away from the extreme violence, but that all starts to go away as soon as the characters start talking, or sighing and looking at each other. I do have to disagree where you call out Mulligan as the weak link. I thought hers was an understated and effective performance. She was perfect for what Refn was trying to capture with her character - innocence, love and the humanity Driver so badly needed to come in contact with.David H. As I finished writing my review, I half considered starting all over again and making sound and music the primary focus from the jump. It's the film's greatest strength.

As for Albert Brooks ... this is the second review I've read so, oh, gosh, he's getting hype for this? I don't see it. At all. Unless a lot of it is the typical, "Look, Brooks can play against type!" stuff that, when you think about it, is always an insult to the actor in question. (Not that I'm implying you're doing that here.) Guess I better brace myself for the review ahead ...Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-6943253830875226622011-09-18T19:36:08.407-04:002011-09-18T19:36:08.407-04:00I agree. I love how fluidly it becomes a part of that sequence after so much time where it seems just another part of the overlapping soundtrack.

Brooks does have moments of almost comedy, but they seem almost in spite of himself, inadvertent moments of humor he does not recognize or at least acknowledge. That disappointment equally informs his viciousness; I love that he plays a gangster essentially like a Jewish mother.Jake Colehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15532951308638768249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-494160638739613756.post-12431486274271616492011-09-18T19:18:32.143-04:002011-09-18T19:18:32.143-04:00It's a small touch, and I doubt it means anyth...It's a small touch, and I doubt it means anything, but I love that Driver is listening to a Clippers game during the prologue. Any other movie it would have been the Lakers. At first you think his interest is that of a quirky fan picking an odd time to care about the score, but soon we discover why he's invested. It's very cleverly brought in.

I did find Brooks funny intermittently, but what's great about Brooks is he's always funny in character. (As he was in "Taxi Driver," a crucial link for this film.) I loved his disappointment that he won't get to see his name on a car, right before...well, you know.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01450775188328918558noreply@blogger.com
