Netflix Instant Picks (5/24/13-5/30/13)

Netflix's changed API now make tracking expiring soon titles much more difficult, so this week's titles are reduced to new picks and an old delight. Very happy to see David Ayer's unexpectedly gripping cop drama End of Watch make Netflix, as well as Neighboring Sounds, which I've been meaning to see for months now. And the final pick is but another entry in my Nicolas Cage advocacy.

Still trying to piece together some recommendations after the May 1 turnover, so it's another week of new streaming titles for me. I go for a Lars von Trier that still leaves me feeling conflicted, a highly praised work of modern horror, and a mainstream but still confrontational coming-of-age tale from Alfonso Cuarón. Netflix lost a devastating amount of films at the top of the month, so I devoted all of last Friday's picks to what got added in a pathetically meager offset. It can't make up for the mass expiration, but I found a few titles that managed to catch my eye.

Man, Netflix is really justifying their subscription fee lately. Second week in a row with so many noteworthy additions that I devoted all my picks to new stuff, while Corey recommended one of my favorite John Ford movies (and, therefore, one of the greatest of all movies). A lot of stuff has hit/will hit Netflix, and these all-new picks barely scratch the surface of the avalanche of great titles hitting streaming service. For now, though, the bevy of Cartoon Network programs should tidy over anyone.

Netflix Instant Picks 3/15/13—3/21/13

I missed posting this last Friday and didn't rush to get it up later because two of my Netflix picks for the week were set to expire by Saturday. On the plus side, the two films I singled out as expiring last Saturday apparently got their streaming licenses renewed, because when I checked my queue during the week, both Metropolitan and Slacker were still there with their expiring soon warnings removed. Netflix Instant Picks 3/8/13—3/14/13

Slim pickings this week in terms of notable additions and deletions from Netflix, but at least it's balanced out with one of Howard Hawks' finest films. A good Hawks is worth its weight in gold.

It's that of week again where Corey and I post our favorite picks for Netflix Instant. This week, I celebrate finally getting the chance to watch the Comedy Bang Bang show, big up my favorite PTA movie and remind myself to finally watch Me and Orson Welles before it drops off streaming.
